Building Healthy Families: Let's Get Physical!

When we think about a healthy person or family, we might use normal and healthy interchangeably when they are not necessarily the same thing.  A legacy of abuse might be normal, but it isn't healthy.  Your family might practice a lot of really healthy choices, but that doesn't mean your family is normal either.  Whether you have little ones at home, are running big kids to practice right and left or stepping into the grandparent stage of life, there are important ways you can build up your family from week to week.

Today in the Building Healthy Families series, we're talking about physical ways we can build up our families. Our family's health and physical circumstances can quickly become a blessing or a burden.  It is really easy to get so consumed with busy that we often don't realize how much our family is missing out on some important building blocks.  The physical, emotional and spiritual man are most certainly intertwined, but the following suggestions highlight ways our physical life can be enhanced.

Work Together.  I know, I know.  It very well may be quicker and easier to just do it yourself, but if they never do it, they'll never learn.  When we join together to tackle and finish a job of some kind, everyone benefits.  Hard work is good for the soul.  Working together lifts spirits and lightens a load. As a mom of kids who are more able to help with chores, insisting they share responsibilities around the house helps me with my sanity!! Above all else, in working together you will give each other precious time to engage life together.

Cook at Home.   This is one of the most important things you can do in your family! First, what we feed our family matters, now more than ever.  Most of us aren't eating regularly from backyard garden grown veggies and the number of chemicals we are consume (through air and processed foods) is much higher than we would like to believe.  Cooking at home, even if it wouldn't be considered the 'healthiest', is a big level up from eating at most restaurants because you will use less sugar, chemicals and preservatives.  Beyond health benefits, cooking provides tons of learning opportunities.  Math, science, reading and just life skills are all subjects taught in the kitchen. Lastly, cooking home means eating together which means spending real time together. Spending dinner together more often than not increases academic performance, self-esteem, resilience and lower substance abuse, teen pregnancy, depression, obesity and eating disorders.

Go Outside.  With technology being what it is, we all spend a LOT of time indoors not moving.  From microbes in the soil that help fight depression to vitamin D from the sun to keep your immune system up and running, we physically NEED to go outside as much as possible.  Children need to explore the natural world all the more!  The connection to our natural world is undeniable when you give it a chance.   Plant a garden, go hiking, play sports in the yard, ride bikes, visit a park, take your dog for a walk, or maybe just move your activities outside like dinner on the patio or reading a book on the porch.  Not only is going outside usually free, but your giving your kids (and yourself) a more grounding life.

Take Their Health Seriously.  One of the best ways to physically build up your family is to teach and model healthy habits. Drink plenty of water.  Make sure they get enough sleep. More than two nights of not enough rest almost guarantees one of my kids getting sick.  Exercise. Eat a colorful diet full of fresh fruits and vegetables.  Consider their diet and it's impact on their life as an adult - fertility, pregnancy, hormone issues, etc.  Whatever their physical needs or symptoms, take it seriously and always get a second or third opinion.  Invest in good quality vitamins/supplements to make sure their body is getting all it needs, especially in times of stress, poor eating and sick seasons.  If you need some guidance, I'm always happy to help.  Above all else, pay attention to them and their habits.  Together you are the best detective in determining when something is out of balance.

Be a Better Model.   It is almost just as easy for me to write these recommendations as it is for you to read them.  Living them out is a whole other animal.  With all there is to keep up with, I find myself missing the mark so much.  In all of these areas, you cannot expect much impact if you as a role model aren't really invested.  When I'm not diligent with drinking water and making that a priority, there's no reason for my kids to either.  Whatever area of life your child needs support in, it will start with you.  Do it together! That's the best way for everyone to grow.

Building Healthy Families

There is so much pain and brokenness in the world.  You know it. I know it.  If you're paying attention at all, you have likely wept at the tragedies surging around us.  Disease, infidelity, addiction, greed, or just straight up neglect seem to be satan's first response in our modern world today.  There's no doubt in my mind that we need everything Jesus is offering us and more if we are going to survive all of this mess.  One of the great things the Word of God offers is wisdom and with some prayer and His blessing, some discernment to go along with it.  In this Building Healthy Families Series, I hope to talk about ways to build up and support our families in order to combat all of satan's attacks toward the contrary.

Physically.  Our family's health and physical circumstances can be a blessing or a burden.  What are some physical ways we can build up their lives and the whole of the family?  We'll talk about food, exercise, safety, and general provision.

Emotionally.  Whether or not dealing with emotions is a strength for you, you deal with your family's emotions every day.  Do you know what emotional neglect looks like?  We'll talk about how your feelings (or lack thereof) can be traumatic or life-giving to your family and why understanding anyone's feelings is a game changer in life.

Spiritually.  We are spiritual beings either being starved or fed.  Do you know the difference?  We'll talk about some common misconceptions about what it means to be spiritual and why it should matter to you.

SchoolhouseTeachers.com: A Homeschool PreK-12 Curriculum Review

DISCLOSURE: I received this product FREE through the Homeschool Review Crew.  I also receive commissions for items purchased through links in this post.

So, here we are.  Diving into 2021, ready or not.  When it comes to lesson planning and curriculum, things don't always work out the way we plan.  And clearly, our plans for 2020 in general didn't exactly pan out, right? Sometimes there are gaps we don't anticipate.  Other times a good idea completely fails due to learning differences.  If you're in need of options and alternatives, then keep reading for my review of Ultimate PreK-12 Annual Membership from SchoolhouseTeachers.com.

Review Product:

This membership provides complete access to their entire digital curriculum offerings and resources for all grades.

Who Is This Product For?

Any family with access to a computer and printer can find useful content for home education.  It is especially great for families with multiple children.

How SchoolhouseTeachers.com Works:

With the Annual Membership, parents can build an education for multiple children however they see fit.  There are multiple ways to search - by grade, by subject or simply browse collections.   One of their latest additions is boxed curriculum for every grade level, which provides a complete program for an entire grade level complete with lesson plans, electives and a host of optional further research suggestions. They also offer planning tools, a robust video library, access to World Book online encyclopedia, a members forum, and a seasonal content corner.  SchoolhouseTeachers.com is the ultimate buffet of educational content while also letting the cook choose your meal if you would like!

My Family's Experience:

I have been working with SchoolhouseTeachers.com for 4-5 years, as long as I have been associated with the Homeschool Review Crew, and it has been amazing to see the continual growth and expansion of what they make available to their members.  Since the landscape of our homeschool regularly shifts with review products, SchoolhouseTeachers.com is a constant backup and resource library.  When I need copywork pages or some math facts help, I can dig up something pretty quickly.  If there is a subject we've overlooked, I can find something to fill that gap easily.  For this review, we took a look at their new boxed curriculum for 4th grade for my oldest. While I didn't need an entire curriculum, especially over a holiday break, trying out a 4th grade Health curriculum worked well.

If you're a regular reader, you know healthy living and how we care for our bodies is a big priority in my family.  Health principles are kind of ingrained in our daily life anyway so it hasn't necessarily been on my radar to include it in curriculum.  That being said, I LOVE the approach this class takes by infusing scripture into every lesson.  One of the main reasons I healthy living is important to me is because God has given us an amazing earth that is full of solutions for staying healthy if we'll just look for them.  So why wouldn't you teach health on the basis of scripture first?

Each class comes with a curriculum guide that shows you what to expect and plan for by the week.  In this class the authors incorporated reading from other courses as well with links provided and pdfs available.  For the well prepared parent, you have the ability to print out all elements from day one.  But as for those of us who might forget something or lose other things, you can always come back for more or have the option to save contents to your device.

In addition to building the content on religious principles, I loved the incorporation of World Book resources, including games like the one pictured below.  Digital (printable) content can sometimes feel a little boring to this ADHD brain of mine - even though the subject matter may not be - but with a variety of elements (like World Book, videos, etc.) the learning experience is good for all kinds of learners!

As usual, SchoolhouseTeachers.com continues to surpass expectations in making home education easy, rich and full of possibilities!  If you're in the market for alternatives and options, consider trying SchoolhouseTeachers.com with your family.

Providing an Organic Home Environment

Maybe it's part of my emotional and feeling nature but I love for things in my life to be as gradual and organic as possible.  The sudden change of plans and the brand new experiences - that life is stocked full of - are hard on my sensitive nervous system.  So, whenever I can I work hard to provide an environment that can naturally produce certain outcomes.  This act of self-preservation has provided some insight, especially in regards to my children and their development that I just LOVE!

It isn't rocket science or anything, but I think it bears notice in our cookie cutter world.  When you surround someone with certain things, there will be a response.  The nature and quality of things you surround them with will dictate the quality and nature of their response.  Hang out with complainers and you'll find yourself complaining and unhappy.  Work in a place with windows and a great view, you'll have a little better outlook on life.  When it comes to kids and education, there are so many factors that can influence for good or bad that it behooves us to incorporate as much good as we can squeeze in!

No parent, relationship or educational journey is perfect and our family certainly has its weaknesses. Still, there are a few things that have had a really good effect on our family's development and education that I think are worth sharing.

Music - Between my teaching piano lessons, 3 worship services a week worth of a capella singing, singing as a part of bedtime routine, and the perpetual playlist at our fingertips via Spotify and Pandora, music is part of everything we do.  Enhancing their musical involvement doesn't just boost their musical skills, but activates their brain development as a whole.  Google it. ;)

Nature - Being outside, having the freedom to move outside, gardening, hiking, climbing trees, seeing mountains and waterfalls - all of this is so good for your body and soul.  Besides the obvious vitamin D that is desperately needed for a healthy immune system, children are hard-wired to move and boxing them up for too long really does them a disservice.  The great outdoors help us balance out where we get stuck.  Can't focus? Go outside for a while.  Difficult relating to other people? Go outside for a while.  Whenever possible, there is always an outside element to whatever we are doing.  From school to vacation, we plan to go outside and probably get dirty!  That is definitely one of the perks of homeschooling.

Books - This might seem like a no-brainer to some, but I feel it is best when taken a step further.  My kids have been doubly blessed because they have access to books and also have parents (namely their father) who read and appreciate books themselves.  I have always loved to read, but it takes more diligence to fit it in these days.  Mr. Butler though, always has his head in a book or listening to something on his commute to work.  His relationship with books has nothing to do with the rest of us and speaks volumes to his kids.  So far, the kids both consume books like their daily meals - just can't get enough!  I know for some that reading a book for fun is like exercising for fun - it just doesn't compute.  Still, both are incredibly healthy examples to set for our families AND to keep our brains young and active!

Learning - This is an extension of the last one.  Mr. Butler is very abnormal (at least in my circles) in that he loves learning new things and loves to consume information.  The more data the better! Add that to home being the location of school and learning anyway, the kids are constantly surrounded by various aspects of learning.  When learning new things is a natural state of living, our brains, our relationships, even our moods can be enhanced.  Sometimes the DIY or how-to videos the kids beg to watch get annoying, but it is evidence of their love of learning (and their nerdy father!).

Educating and raising kids is difficult at best.  My conservative nature loves to find ways to cushion my path and I guess building these life aspects into our routines so that they aren't even options most days helps me relax! Plus, now that J is really diving into school, I can see the benefits all around me! I love that!

What Happens If You're Disappointed This Week?

Disappointment is a big issue with kids around.  Every parent will tell you not to say a word about a trip to the zoo or a possible visitor ...
