The Continent Race Game: A Byron's Games Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

Do you know a lot about geography other than your home country?  I remember learning some in school, but I didn't quite realize just how clueless (or perhaps forgetful) I was when it came to the wide expanse of world geography until we played a new game called Continent Race  from Byron's Games.  As our family played through Continent Race, we all discovered countries we had never heard of!  This game is most certainly an educational one!

What We Received:

This game includes 5 Continent Lists with Maps, 205 Country (Flag) Cards, 3 Antarctica Wild Cards, 1 World Map, and 1 page of instructions.

How To Play:

The game is for ages 7 and up, but my 6 1/2 year old daughter played just fine!  You must have at least 2 players to play and we played with 4.

The object of the game is for players to collect the required number of country cards from the continents and whoever does it first wins!  It's a typical card game play in that you start with 7 cards, draw and discard 1 every turn.  When you collect the correct number of cards for each continent through this card game play (2 cards from Australia/Oceania and 4 cards each from Africa, Asia, the Americas and Europe), on your turn you call out each country and then locate it on the map.  Then you place those cards down, discard and draw again to maintain 7 cards.

There is an Advanced Level play with Orange Mystery cards that contain don't reveal what continent they are from, increasing the difficulty of the game. There is also a player challenge where each player tries to name more countries from a specific continent.

What We Thought:

When it first arrived my 9 year old son, 6 1/2 year old daughter attempted to figure out how to play but we decided to wait for dad because it was a little confusing.  He's our methodical instruction manual reader anyway.  Turns out Byron's Games offers how-to videos that make it super simple if you're not familiar with the game.

The kids LOVED it.  Maybe we're a bit of a nerdy family, but they love games of all kinds and this once seemed to be just easy and challenging enough to not be overwhelming while keeping their attention.  As an educator, I think it is a perfect way to practice your geography skills.  Since I'm not a world traveler, there were many countries I had either never heard of or forgotten all about.  And then there are those, is it a city or a country - I can't remember!  It most definitely stimulated all of our brains.  The combination of saying the names out loud while located their place on the map is a great way to reinforce learning and engagement.

I have to share the most joked about country that we all discovered together - Djibouti.  Aside from the adolescent humor, it turned out to be a really fun word to say.  As the mom, I shook my head from the ridiculousness of it all, but I can guarantee you it will be a lasting memory in our family. Do you know where Djibouti is? Forgive me. I live in a house of children!

This turned out to be great source of education and fun that will be used in our family for a long time!

Paddington Bear: A Branch Out World Review

Branch Out World
My son (age 7) always gets extra chatty at bedtime.  So much so that I had to limit him to 2 or 3 questions so good night didn't last 30 minutes.  Lately, his questions have been a lot of 'How is this made?' or "What makes that work?' and honestly I don't know the answers without googling it or asking their dad.  The result is we both learn a lot together.  As they state on their website, my latest review, Paddington Bear from Branch Out World is designed For Families That Love Learning Together.  It is so easy to get caught up in the typical school paradigm where a teacher teaches the information they have already learned, but sooner or later real homeschooling involves learning with each other and from each other.  Curiosity breeds new questions and new questions bring new perspectives to consider and before you know it your adventure is quite different than you expected.  I am not an expert in all subjects that my children will learn so some days we will all learn who invented baseball or what a hydrapult is together.

Picture Book Explorers - Paddington

Branch Out World is a company based in the UK that was started by a homeschool family looking to share great literature with other families.  Not having any experience with a UK company, this curriculum was enjoyable and educational.  There were a few differences in the language that I had to explain, but nothing hindered us in any way.  Paddington Bear is a literature-based unit study from the Picture Book Explorers series that Branch Out World puts out.   It comes in digital format and includes instructions for over 30 activities, with 45 pages of printables like notebook pages, flags, maps, and minibooks.   There are also extra resources listed that could complement the study like various books on Peru and Paddington videos.  With so many possible activities, the study includes a lot of different subjects, including:

  • History & Geography
  • Creative Writing
  • Art
  • Science (Migration!)
  • Grammar & Vocabulary
  • Architecture & Design
  • Math

The significant thing about reading stories together is that often there are multiple layers and several details that go unnoticed at first.  Upon the first reading of Paddington, no one remembered that the country of Peru was even mentioned!  This was a great opportunity to dive into places (England & Peru) we weren't very familiar with.  The study is divided into 5 sections:

  • Day 1 – Exploring the Setting (History and Geography)
  • Day 2 – Exploring the Words (Grammar & Writing)
  • Day 3 – Exploring the Pictures
  • Day 4 – Exploring Science (Animals & Experiments)
  • Day 5 – Exploring Maths, Crafts and More

All activities are left open to exploring further if you choose and also stand alone for when you want to pick and choose certain ones and not others.  You are encouraged to record notes on your adventure in some way, like making a lap book or keeping a journal. It's a very flexible plan with multiple variations possible.  The intended age for this study is 5-10 years old.

When everything a child is learning reinforces or connects back together in some way, it really does stick with them much longer.  Branch Out World has done for us what many of us dream about doing, but don't get around to - beautifully weave subjects and lessons together where everyone is learning.  One of my favorite topics brought out in this study was migration and push/pull factors.  It was a subject we hadn't discussed together yet and taught me a few things I had never considered before.

Branch Out World did a great job with this study and we found it to be a perfect change of pace that proved to be very fruitful!  Check out all they have to offer by following them on social media.

Let's Go Geography: A Review

Let's Go Geography

One of the most valuable semesters of college that I had included three separate classes studying different aspects of the same time period.  20th Century Music History, the American Novel since 1920, and 20th Century British Literature all hovered around a time period that literally started the change our culture as we know it.  I learned so much during those 3 months that I never wanted to learn any other way.  Up for review today is Let's Go Geography from Carol Henderson, author of a versatile Geography curriculum that facilitates the kind of holistic learning that I love!  Through the base of world geography, students are exploring various skills and subjects including coloring, writing, maps, flags, crafts and culture.
Let's Go Geography
This online product is loaded with content that will stand on its own or can springboard you into other subjects.  There are a few individual country lessons, but the best value is the subscription service that is available for a semester or a year at a time.
To cover the entire curriculum, it is spread out over three years (6 semesters).  Every week you'll receive an email linking you to the next country to explore, but you always have the option through the website to hop around however you would like.  As a bonus, you receive a free printable Travel Journal Cover that is fun for the students to keep their work and projects in.
Let's Go Geography
Each country or region's lesson follows a similar format consisting of 6 chapters: Map It!, The Flag, The Music, Let's Explore, Create!, and Printables.  All the lessons are a downloadable pdf that include several links and videos accessible through the individual document. Each year covers 26 countries and two regions of the United States.
This is a very hands-on curriculum geared towards K-4th grade  and we can attest to that!  The activities are easily modified for age and regardless of skill, there were plenty of activities for everyone!  If you do the entire lesson as designed, each should take about an hour.  We started at the beginning where we focused on the Northeast, Hawaii and Canada.  This gave us the chance to incorporate our recently acquired goodies from Hawaii that the grandparents had just brought back to us.  This was a great example of learning about a place in multiple different formats from curriculum and regular life!

From there we skipped around and below is our craft from Sweden that both kids really enjoyed making!

Sprinkled throughout the lessons are breaks and review lessons.  The review weeks include more new content in new formats that goes over information already covered thus far in the curriculum.  Over all the different chapters and types of lessons, I started to think of so many different ways to implement this curriculum beyond the recommended full three years.  You could isolate one aspect - like crafts or music - and learn about more places in a week just through that category.  As another curriculum touches on different places, this could easily be used as a supplement.  It provides lots of ways to reinforce learning on multiple planes. Whatever the case, we found Let's Go Geography useful for any classroom and certain a great resource over time.  Check out what other people thought by reading their reviews below.
