Reading Eggs: An Online Reading Program Review

Disclaimer: I received a FREE copy of this product through the HOMESCHOOL REVIEW CREW in exchange for my honest review.  I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way.

As virtual learning has become center stage for a lot of families, finding a good online educational program is more important than ever. Online programs are certainly all the rage, but they are not all created equal.  Today I get to tell you about an old favorite of ours, Reading Eggs from Blake eLearning Inc.  We have had the privilege of reviewing this program a couple times before, but this will be the first time all three of my children get to try it out!

What We Received:

We received a 1-year subscription to Reading Eggs which includes access to Reading Eggs Junior (ages 2-4), Reading Eggspress (ages 7-13) , Math Seeds (ages 3-9), and Fast Phonics (ages 5-10) for three kids.

How It Works:

Each family subscription can support up to 4 children per family.  Once your child has set up an account, they can choose what area they want to work in.  There is an option to simply begin at Lesson 1 or in the case of Math Seeds, Reading Eggs and Reading Eggspress there is a placement test you can take/retake at any time.

Math Seeds provides a series of video lessons and a variety of activities all centered around numbers and math.  As a reward for correct answers and participation, the user receives Acorns that can be traded in for items for their avatar (apartment, furniture, backdrops, etc.)  Reading Eggs provides the same only the topic is all about reading and the reward is eggs.  Reading Eggs Junior is geared towards preschool age children and simply getting them ready for Reading Eggs.  Fast Phonics is designed to work on phonics in a similar fashion as the other elements with video lessons and games, especially with kids who need extra work on it.  Reading Eggspress is designed for readers to work on their vocabulary, grammar and generally increase their reading level.   In addition to the regular work of each program, there are a variety of games, a library of books, and speed skills type areas where a student can practice what they have learned.

In these programs a student can always go back or start over if refreshing is needed.  Moving ahead requires a student to simply work through the program or take a placement test.

How We Used It:

My 7 year old and 9 year old had used the Reading Eggs program before and were amply motivated to use the program.  Since they had previously used the program, their accounts were continued from before.  We just had to set my 3 year old up an account on our family dashboard.  Reading Eggs is available on every platform via app or internet browser so all 3 kids could be using the program at the same time, one on a laptop, one on a kindle and another on an iPad. The app is even available on android phones now!

My 3 year old really enjoyed using the program, although it took a little more parent involvement due to his inexperience with it all.  The learning process is appropriate for his age and effectively worked toward number and letter recognition.  The 7 and 9 year old are exceptionally motivated to get more eggs and buy more 'things' for their avatar, but they are reading and learning in the process.  They now have monthly themes and limited edition items in the store so there's always something new to get excited about too! New words, grammar practice and just lots of reading is what Reading Eggs is built on.  Math seeds is sometimes forgotten but the charm and education are on the same level.  It's definitely a good source for math fact reinforcement.

We shy away from too much screen time or online learning so this program is used as a reward for completion of other things most days.  It is also a great resource for reluctant readers!  Reading Eggs is my kind of program because the kids are having so much fun AND learning a whole lot!
